A first class always feels a little nerve-racking. A new studio, an unfamiliar machine, people who all seem to know what they're doing. Here's exactly what will happen, so you can arrive feeling at ease.
Before your class
- Book online from the timetable and tick “First visit”. Your first class is half price.
- Wear something comfortable and close-fitting that you can bend in. Loose T-shirts tend to ride up during exercises on your back.
- Bring grip socks. They're a must on the Reformer. If you don't have any, you'll find them at reception.
- Avoid a heavy meal for at least an hour before class.
When you arrive
Come 10 minutes early. We'll welcome you, show you where to leave your things and ask about any injuries, pregnancy and your goals. This isn't a formality: it's how your instructor knows what to adapt for you.
If you're on the Reformer, we'll show you how to set up the springs, headrest and straps. It takes two minutes.
During the class
Groups are capped at 6, so your instructor sees every movement. You'll hear a lot about breathing and your “centre”. Don't worry if you can't coordinate everything at first. Nobody manages it first time round.
The secret: slower is harder, and more effective. If you're tempted to speed up, slow down.
After the class
You'll probably feel muscles you never knew you had. A little soreness the next day is perfectly normal. Drink plenty of water and go for a walk. Your second class is usually much easier, because you already know the machine.
